Learn how to create a basic website!

Recommended Grades: 6th – 12th grade

About the Program

In this course, students learn how to create their own website.

Every week, instructors will be teaching and making available new web development concepts, lecture videos, along with assignments for self-practice. 

Students also get project guidelines to start building out their custom website as they go through different assignments & become more confident in their web development skills.

Level 1: Learn how to use coding languages: HTML, CSS, and Bootstrap (framework). You’ll also learn best practices when creating a website and how to think creatively. We’ll host your website online so you can share with you friends & family to view!

Level 2: Learn how to code in JavaScript! You’ll learn the basics of creating an interactive and responsive website. Students must take Level 1 or have prior experience with HTML & CSS in order to register for this course.

Overview

Make a custom website that you’ll want to share with the world! In this class, students will learn the fundamentals of HTML using the REPL.IT IDE software program. Students will work closely with our instructors to create their very own portfolio website and have access to additional digital assignments to strengthen their web development skills. All websites will have the option to be hosted (either publicly or privately) on a Dreams for Schools domains if desired.

We offer 2-week, 4-week, and 6-week versions of this class. 

  • 2-week: Into to HTML
  • 4-week: Intro to HTML & CSS
  • 6-week: Intro to HTML, CSS, & Bootstrap

Includes 2 – 3 hours of at-home asynchronous material.

*Requires access to a computer, internet, and webcam.

Instructor to Student Ratio: 1 to 5

Completing this course will help you:

Learning Path

In the first week of class, students will gain an introduction to HTML, learn how to navigate the IDE platform we’ll be using,  and learn the following HTML concepts:

  • Headings
  • Paragraphs
  • Font Styles
  • Lists

Students will also start to brainstorm ideas for how they want to design and create their website.

In the second week of class, students will further their knowledge of HTML by learning:

  • Divs
  • Comments
  • Images
  • Links
  • Videos

Students will also start to create their own website.

In the third week of class, students will improve their knowledge of creating a good website by learning CSS and the following properties:

  • Colors
  • Background Colors
  • Font Size
  • Other Cool Properties

Students will start to utilize CSS on their own website.

In the fourth week of class, students will continue to learn CSS  with specific focus the following properties:

  • Borders
  • PAdding
  • Margins
  • Height & Width

Students will start to incorporate these into their own website.

In the fifth week of class, students will start to learn Bootstrap and gain an introduction into creating:

  • Headers
  • Footers

Students will start to incorporate these into their own website.

In the last week of class, students will continue learning Bootstrap and gain an introduction into creating:

  • Grids
  • Cards

Students will start to incorporate these into their own website. Students websites will also hosted live (if allowed) for all to see.
