The scholarship program, made possible by Neudesic’s generous support, provides financial assistance and professional development opportunities for DFS Instructors pursuing careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM) fields.
“We are so pleased to award the STEAM Scholarships to two incredibly deserving DFS Instructors,” said Nithin Jilla, Executive Director of Dreams for Schools. “Oscar and Leila exhibit passion and skills in computer science, and we know this scholarship will help propel them on their journey to make meaningful contributions in STEAM.”
Oscar Arenas – Computer Science at California State University, Long Beach
Oscar Arenas is completing his last year at California State University Long Beach, pursuing a bachelor’s degree in computer science. During his time at CSULB, Oscar has developed invaluable technical skills and knowledge that have shaped his professional ambitions. As an ambitious, growth-oriented individual, Oscar aspires to be at the forefront of technological innovation and create transformative solutions. He is eager to apply everything he has learned in school to contribute to impactful projects. Oscar’s passion for computer science is also evidenced by his work as a DFS Instructor, where he has helped teach the concepts to youth. He excels at encouraging reluctant students to participate, like the time he collaborated with a hesitant student on an engineering project. Oscar’s patience and ability to inspire students makes him a beloved DFS Instructor. This scholarship will provide essential financial support as Oscar completes his CSULB degree and embarks on his technology career. It also serves as an affirmation of his great potential to achieve his dreams in the STEAM field.
Leila Nunez – Computer Science at California State University, Long Beach
Leila Nunez is a third-year computer science major at Cal State Long Beach who brings passion and diversity to her STEAM pursuits. Introduced to coding at a young age, Leila has enjoyed honing her programming skills and working on projects that showcase her abilities. Beyond her academics, Leila is involved in organizations like the Society of Women Engineers that provide networking and support. She also works for the university’s student run media outlet, demonstrating her multifaceted interests. As a DFS Instructor, Leila loves sharing her enthusiasm for computer science and engineering with new students on their first day. Her favorite moments are igniting that initial curiosity in young minds. With this scholarship, Leila can focus more wholly on her studies and preparation for post-graduate life. Knowing her financial needs are met gives Leila comfort and allows her to maximize her time at CSULB. She is grateful for the vote of confidence from DFS and Neudesic as she charts her course to make meaningful change as a leader in technology.
The entire Dreams for Schools team would like to sincerely thank Neudesic and the volunteers who participated in the scholarship review committee. Neudesic’s generous support and commitment to education equity is making a meaningful impact through DFS’ STEAM programs and initiatives.
