As we have recently launched our Spring programs here at Dreams for Schools, we wanted to take some time to highlight one of our amazing new partners, Breakthrough San Juan Capistrano (SJC)!
During our winter program, we teamed up with Breakthrough to pilot Level 1 of our Web Development program. From January 18, 2021 to March 26, 2021, 6 students from Breakthrough SJC participated in our program, taught by Amy Huynh and Jeffery Guerra, and learned how to code and create their own websites using HTML, CSS, and Bootstrap. Students were tasked to create websites related to their hobbies and interests and presented their websites in a mini-showcase at the end of the program.
By collaborating with Breakthrough SJC, we have been able to add a STEM component to opportunities for their student to pursue. With the ever-changing role of technology in our future, it is imperative that students are prepared to meet the needs of the 21st century. Thank you Breakthrough SJC for allowing us to work with such motivated and talented young individuals and help expose them to opportunities available to them in Technology fields.
Breakthrough San Juan Capistrano supports students from middle school to college graduation by providing college access programming, tuition-free. By providing academically enriched opportunities and support, Breakthrough changes the trajectory of students whose backgrounds are underrepresented in higher education. Nearly all Breakthrough SJC students are from low-income backgrounds and many will be the first generation in their families to graduate from college. Breakthrough SJC is one of 24 affiliate sites across the nation belonging to Breakthrough Collaborative, and it is the only Breakthrough site in Southern California.
Closing remarks: These students are so talented and hardworking. We are so proud of what they have learnt and achieved in such a short timeframe— especially those that leveled up in our Web development program!
