Fall 2019 Riverside Unified School District AppJamboree Recap & Results

On December 2nd, Dreams for Schools hosted its first AppJamboree of the Fall 2019 AppJam+ season, where students from 6 Orange County middle and high schools presented the mobile applications they had developed over a 10-week period. This AppJamboree was held at the University of California, Irvine and featured a friendly competition between the attending teams.

Our fifth and final AppJamboree of the Fall AppJam+ season closed out a truly momentous season. On Friday December 6th, students from Longfellow Elementarty of the Riverside Unified School District presented the mobile applications they had developed over a 10-week period. The AppJamboree event was held at Longfellow Elementary, featuring presentations from 5 teams.

With the technical sophistication demonstrated in all of the presented apps, judges had the incredibly tough task of selecting the top team to take the prize. In addition to the friendly judging competition, a "Best Poster" award was voted on by participating students and judges also scored teams to receive a "Best Stage Presentation" award.

1st Place Winners of Google Chrome Books – Eco Warriors
App Name: A.R. Planet
Mentor: Gisela L.

App Description: Our game teaches the player the significance of saving the Amazon Rainforest. The Amazon Rainforest produces about 12% to 16% of our planet's oxygen. If the player takes care of the rainforest, the player will earns points. However, if the player collides with the fire and uses all 3 lives, then the game is over. The theme of the game is to show the players that if they help the environment, then that is a step closer to saving the world

2nd Place Winners of Sphero BB-9 Robots – Dolphin Group
App Name: Earth Helpers
Mentor: Wilson C.
Team Members: Cynthia S., Dominga G., Dyanna B., Yesica A.
App Description: Our games teaches people to pick up trash. The game is about a dolphin picking up trash and whenever they do, they get a point. There are squids roaming around and if they touch the squid, they lose a life. The player needs to collect as much trash as possible without touching the squids.
Technical Components Used: Buttons, audio, Canvas, ImageSprite, ImageRandomizer.

App Name: Save the Amazon
Mentor: Kiana M..

App Description: You are trying to set up a camp site in the Amazon Forest but it is completely littered in trash! Clean up the trash by putting them in the correct bins so that you can set up your camping spot.
Technical Components Used: Buttons for character navigation, sprite collision, sprite randomizer


Closing Remarks

This was Dreams for Schools' second time partnering with the Riverside Unified School District and Longfellow Elementary to host the AppJam+ program. With both veterans of the program and fresh faces in attendance, the students of this AppJamboree all demonstrated a high caliber of skill both in their app developments and their on-stage presentations. Thank you so much to all the students of Longfellow elementary for helping us close out a truly amazing AppJam+ season!
